Tap
your potential
Tap dancing and in particular tap aerobics is an effective form
of cardiovascular activity and a good all-round workout.
Tap aerobics is comparable with a high-intensity step class with
the same physical impact and calorie burn.
Of all the dance types, tap is probably the best for all-round
fitness, participants are constantly moving. But, as well as being
a great aerobic workout, tap also helps to develop the muscles
that provide the body with all-important core stability.
Tap works on the deep erector spinal muscles, which support the
neck and lower back, and the pelvic floor muscles, as well as
the transversus abdominis, which reaches from the stomach around
the body to the lower back and maintain balance and upper-body
strength. Many mainstream sports, including tennis, football and
even conventional weight training, often neglect these muscle
groups, which are particularly important for maintaining stability
later in life.
Tap aerobics also develops stronger, more flexible ankles and
calf muscles, which is great for preventing accidents, such as
twisted ankles, and it's also good for co-ordination.
Scientists have become increasingly interested in the mental,
as well as the physical, benefits of dance. Recent research shows
that tap could offer particularly important psychological benefits
that are connected with meditation and relaxation. Our bodies
are subliminally much more perceptive to rhythm than was previously
thought.
